Steven and Doris Marie are overwhelmed to be honored by SCVi for their Vision in Education Dinner and surprised to be acknowledged for simply being who they are. They see themselves as just regular people doing what matters and supporting those around them. The Zimmers have been in Santa Clarita Valley only 15 years. Prior to moving to Santa Clarita, they owned Zimmer Ranch, a 40 acre avocado & lemon orchard which was home to their growing family including Erik, Ashley and Brittney. What is unique about Santa Clarita, according to the Zimmers, is its welcoming open arms attitude and the wealth of opportunities to become involved in this family centered community. Steven has enjoyed a challenging and rewarding professional life. Steven has worked as a public attorney for Oxnard and El Centro, and has had private clients in entitlement and land development, such as Pardee. In 1999, Steven joined Newhall Land & Farming and became its Executive Vice President, retired in 2011 and remains as legal consultant.
Doris Marie started work as Administrator for an El Centro Woman’s Clinic, and created a sex education and family planning curriculum for the local schools grade 7 through college. While her children were young, she was able to stay at home. After the children were in school, Doris Marie secured her best all time job: working as Steven’s office manager and paralegal for his three attorney firm in Oxnard.
The Zimmers share committed values which include service, education and family. To that end Steven serves on the Board of Trustees for College of the Canyons, Child and Family Center is a guest lecturer for USC, and is former chair of the COC Foundation. While in El Centro, he was faculty for the paralegal certificate program for Imperial Valley College. Additionally, Steven serves as the Chairman of the Building Industry’s BILD Foundation. In El Centro, Doris Marie served as chair for the City Planning Commission, member for Mexico-America Health Commission, California Regional Health Commission and on the Board of Clinicas de Salud de Campesinos. While ‘at home’ she assisted school site councils, PTAs and wrote, filed for incorporation and served on local nonprofits such as Ventura County Arts Council, National Charity League, and several school site and PTA groups.
In Santa Clarita, Doris Marie’s service focused on College of the Canyons Foundation, as past chair, Betty Ferguson Foundation and Child and Family Center. She regularly supports nonprofits, schools and COC with workshops focusing on team building, leadership, life balance, relationship, and family dynamics. She loves presenting at COC’s Women’s Conference and enjoyed a truly major personal stretch and thrill supporting COC’s K-12 Arts Outreach Program by ‘Dancing with our Stars’ in 2015. Doris Marie has now joined iLEAD on their Foundation board.
Steven and Doris Marie are proud of their children’s commitment to education which includes: Erik at Art Center College of Design, and is now a product designer; Ashley at UCSD biotech engineering and UCLA MBA, and now in neuromodulation for Boston Scientific; and Brittney at College of the Canyons and is now a CARE specialist here at SCVi for the fourth and fifth grade learners. It is the Zimmers’ great joy to have five grandchildren: Kaden, Noelle, Tristan, Ayla and Mara Jade.
Tradition and connection are very important to Steven and Doris Marie. They celebrate often, especially around family and holidays. For the last four years, they have brought four of five grandchildren together in San Diego at ZIMMER CAMP, a parents’ free zone of connection, fun and skills acquisition. It is the best week of the year!
